Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg railway station

The new Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg stop is part of a multi-modal interchange in the heart of Luxembourg City. Travellers arriving here can either take a train directly to the Kirchberg plateau or switch to the tram that connects the Luxexpo site to the city centre. According to Architect Mathias Fritsch: ‘Regardless of whether you are coming from the north or the south, the direct connection between the Pfaffenthal and the Kirchberg plateau saves you a lot of time. The steepness of the gradient (almost 20% over a distance of 200 m) and the large number of passengers (up to 1,000 if two trains stop at the station at the same time) prompted our solution, which takes the form of a double cableway with a capacity of 168 people, and a tunnel. We also wanted the design to be as discreet as possible so as not to detract from the nearby Pont Rouge, the main attraction on the Luxembourg skyline. On top of the tunnel, nature is already doing its thing once again.’
