Dirk Treinen, Managing Director of Luxforge, is justifiably proud of the spiral staircase he built and installed in a private home and that ultimately earned him a nomination for the Steel Construction Competition 2019. This is welcome recognition for his company, which specialises in steel structures for buildings such as parapets, balconies and canopies. One of the special features of this artisanal creation – which is 100% made in Luxembourg – is that it was produced using 3D scanning and building information modelling (BIM). The new digital techniques that are now available to designers have transformed the way measurements are taken. To avoid causing any problems on site – where the structural work was already quite well advanced and the building services already installed – the surrounding area was scanned using a Faro 3D scanner, which guarantees a measuring accuracy of approximately 3 mm over a distance of 30 metres. The system captures 360-degree images, allowing employees to explore the site in detail from the comfort of their own desks.
